Funding Priorities

A minimum of 25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the national Komen for the Cure Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world. Up to 75 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race stays in the local community to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects.

Brief Summary of Priorities

  1. Decrease the number of African American women being diagnosed at a late stage (cancers that have gone outside the breast—regional or distant)
According to Cancer Planet, in the United States, the mortality rate for African Americans was on the rise from 1975 to about 1993. Since then the rate has dropped significantly. However, in Kansas the mortality rate never dropped and has continued to rise. Also, according to the Kansas Cancer Registry, African American women have a higher proportion of their breast cancers diagnosed at a distant site than their white counterparts.
  2. Increase the Affiliate’s contact with rural women in order to provide education opportunities for breast health, breast cancer, and services available.
Through Provider Surveys and Census Data 88 of the 105 counties in the state of Kansas are considered Rural and Frontier. Because of the geographical location these counties lack sufficient resources to provide rural women with vital breast health education and resources.
  3. Develop partnerships and collaborations with county and state organizations to increase access to breast health services and ultimately all medical services in rural Kansas communities.
Through provider and survivor surveys, coupled with interaction with other health care organizations it has become apparent to the Mid-Kansas Affiliate that in order to carry out long range strategies for breast health and education opportunities in a significant way better access to medical services are and will continue to be a barrier.
